4 gallon square buckets for preps

Anyone using these? Looks like a good size (~30lbs of grain).

I'm guessing with a mylar bag (16" X 24") and a 750-1000cc oxygen absorber they'd be fine.

We are using those, and though I can't find my receipt for the mylar bags right now I think you nailed the size we bought as well. I'll confirm that later.

The square shape means they store much more compactly. In mylar we get about 15 lbs rolled oats in them or 27 lbs rice. Storing white sugar in 4 lb bricks without the mylar gets you 24 lb per bucket.

I have trouble opening them--I'm a woman with fairly small hands. I bought a bucket buster opener, but due to the rib placement the bucket buster doesn't fit 50% of the bucket. But if I work at it for a while I can get the lids off without damaging my hands. (I don't have long fingernails or anything, but prying off lids can do injury to a person's fingers if you don't have those useful hulking hands!)

If you have other particular questions about them, I've got 30 of 'em packed with various items that I can use to weigh, measure, or collect whatever other information that you require.

80 buckets, not 30...

And the mylar bags are indeed the 16X24 PAKVF4 ones. We bought ours and the O2 absorbers from IMPAK.

We bought ours from US plastic. (www.usplastic.com)

Freight was about $140 for us to have 80 buckets delivered to a friendly local business (it would have been a little extra to deliver to a residential address).

Hello Randy,
I like the square ones a lot, as they shave off some cubic inches in storage space...
I have been using these boring round ones, as sometimes the freight is fee and when I cannot scam some pickle containers....:

with a combination of the regular and the gamma lids.

Yup... easy to carry, optimizes storage space, but the only thing I don't like is I can't put a gamma lid on 'em!

I put 2-4 lb quantities of several items in one so when I open, I have a variety pack, so-to-speak.

Make sure to get a quote from them on shipping, in writing, sometimes the shipping charge doubles!

I've got a few buckets similar to the ones posted by hystckndle http://beprepared.com/product.asp_Q_...C200_A_name_E_[[

They were from Tim Hortons (Here in Canada there our equiv to your Krispy creme) They just had some dough in them.. I have never done this bucket thing before, I have Mylar bags and 02 absorbers on the way from sorbent systems..

My Question is:- As I will be packing rice in the Mylar bags with Oxygen absorbers and sealing, then stack storing in the buckets do I need to buy new lids for the buckets or will the ones provided be enough?

Thanks

USPlastic called and emailed me with the specific quotes for approval. What the website initially kicks out is *NOT ACCURATE*.

During y2k, I ordered a pallet of buckets from them. they quoted me 80.00 for shipping. then when I got the buckets and the bill, they charged me like 250.00 for shipping. I called them up and spoke to the sales lady and acted like I was going to order a pallet, got her to quote me a second time 80.00 then I asked her why they just charged me 250.00. So they refunded my money! After that I always require a faxed shipping quote. Maybe they took up the policy of calling with freight charges! That is a good thing!

Hello Goldeneye,
Regular ones are great for long term.
I beat them on with a rubber hammer.
I do not stack more than two high.
Sorbent is who I use as well.
They have good info for CC usage of O2 absorbers.
I use an iron and their bags as well.
